Australia's federal opposition wants to lift skilled migration

Thursday, August 02, 2012
Australia's mining boom has well and truly arrived, but the skilled workers needed to successfully and efficiently facilitate the boom are still on short supply, with many calling for a lift in Australia's skilled migration program intake, including the federal opposition.

As reported by The Australian, opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison today spoke at a migration and labour conference for the mining industry in Brisbane, criticising the government for being swayed by unions and their inability to finalise Australia first enterprise migration agreement (EMA) for Western Australia's Roy Hill mine. An EMA would allow to employ temporary foreign workers to work for the Roy Hill mine.

More reported in The Australian:

The federal opposition says Australia should follow the example of the bitterly fought waterfront reforms of the 1990s to open the door to more skilled migration.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says uncertainty about labour supply is weakening the country's attractiveness to investors.

He said waterfront reform was one of the great successes of the Howard government.

"They achieved that objective, and the security and certainty of supply that you can put around our borders over those years, I think, had a dramatic impact," Mr Morrison told the conference.

Mr Morrison said the government's EMA for the Roy Hill project has so far proved to be a mirage.

The government had managed to score an "own goal" on the policy despite having bipartisan support, he told delegates.

The coalition would have a strong focus on skilled migration and remove barriers to companies bringing in temporary foreign workers on the 457 visa.
