On 1 July this year the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) introduced SkillSelect, a new online service which has overhauled Australia's skilled migration program. The new system, in its simplest form, requires intending migrants to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and then wait to be invited to apply for an Australian skilled visa.
Since launching in July, DIAC have seen several thousand EOIs lodged in to the system and on 1 August announced that the first invitation round for Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) and the family sponsored Skilled Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) (subclass 489) visa were held.
Due to the complexity of establishing the new system, the first run of invitations was considerably small, with the following number of invitations issued;
- 90 in the Skilled Independent subclass 189; and
- 10 in the Skilled Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) (family sponsored) subclass 489.
